I begin with many thanks for the warm welcome Beth and I have received at Second Church in our first nine months here. Your friendliness and encouragement made the beginning of our ministry easier than anticipated. (Moves, changes, and new beginnings are never easy!) My hope for the future is that Second will continue to reach out, attract, and welcome new people into our midst as you have done with Beth and me. This will require all of us to, as Jesus said, seek not to be ministered to as much as to minister to others.
My first year at Second has been a time of looking, listening, and learning. I am grateful to Second’s staff and Session for their partnership in this ministry. Love for God and love for others is evident in their service to Second. My goal for Second Church is that its staff, Session, and members will continually tell and live the story of God’s love for all people and God’s desire for every person to reach his/her potential as a follower of Jesus Christ.
In looking back on 2008, highlights include: hiring Diane Banasiak as our enthusiastic full-time Director of Christian Education; bringing Barrett Milner on board to bolster and build our Middle School and High School youth programs; developing a creative and effective Call to Post stewardship campaign; and securing Gary and Martha Anderson and Donna Phillips to enhance our music ministry.
In looking ahead to 2009, I will continue to look, listen, and learn. Part of this inquiry will include: assessing our staffing configuration in light of current and future ministry opportunities; launching an in-depth and transforming Bible study experience called The Bethel Bible Series; assimilating new members to Second into the life and mission of our church; insuring solid stewardship by encouraging giving and evaluating spending; and discovering ways to maximize involvement and grow commitment here at Second. I look forward to our partnership in this endeavor in serving Christ.
Gratefully, Dan
In the last two annual reports, I talked about the church being in transition as it searched for a new pastor. I spoke with confidence about Second’s ability to make that time one of spiritual growth knowing its true head is Jesus Christ.
Well, the search is over; and, now we head into another sort of transition. Second has called a talented, energetic pastor in Dan Hans. Yet it is still a time of transition, as we get to know him and he gets to know us and together we discern God’s vision for the church. This is also a time of transition that never stops as we affirm that we are open to God’s call as "’[t]he church reformed, always reforming’ according to the Word of God and the call of the Spirit" (Book of Order, 2.0200).
Personally, 2008 has been a year of transition in my ministry at Second. The first half of the year mainly involved working with you to keep things going as we awaited Dan’s arrival. Our ministries stayed alive and well thanks to the wonderful leadership of many officers and members.
In the last half of the year, I returned to working primarily with the Deacons, Congregational Life, Fellowship and Mission – all of whom enjoy great leadership and committed members. In 2008, we were hard at work extending the visitation ministry of the deacons, expanding our outreach and welcoming efforts, continuing our mission service commitment (including our 4th mission trip to West Virginia; our 10th Habitat house in Lexington, a second annual Salvation Army bell ringing, a special visit from Malawi mission worker, Jodi McGill, and the ongoing work with the Hope Center, Westminster Village, Ronald McDonald House, God’s Pantry, etc.). The year wasn’t all work, however, as we enjoyed our annual cookout in May, a fellowship kickoff in August and a first ever trunk or treat in October.
The year behind has been blessed as well as challenging. With God’s grace and guidance, I pray that we enter the new year committed to being the living, loving serving body of Jesus Christ.

The fall of 2008 has been a wonderful one for our youth here at Second, and I have greatly appreciated all of your continued support and warm welcome to this church family. May the following serve as a brief synopsis of our 2008 fall activities and a preview of several of the things that we have planned for 2009.
Fall (September-December, 2008):
Spring/Summer (2009):
Barrett Milner, Youth Minister
The calendar year 2008 was a time of many changes in the music program, changes in ensemble titles, changes in rehearsal spaces and changes in personnel. The physical changes began in September, the month in which I began my work as Interim Director of Music. Working in consultation with Donna Phillips, Director of Kids of the Kingdom Children’s’ Choir (new title), and with physical labor from Sanctuary Choir members (our adult choir) the former choir room was transformed into the children’s choir rehearsal room and the Chapel was transformed into the adult choir rehearsal room. These were necessitated by pedagogical (the children’s choir needed a designated space with learning stations) and space needs (the adult choir is outgrowing the choir room a as new members continue to be added). Singers and music directors are very much enjoying the new rehearsal spaces.
Aligned with the academic year, returning and new ensemble directors were added. Donna Phillips returned to the music staff as director of the Kids of the Kingdom Children’s Choir and also as director of the Carillon Handbell Choir. Donna replaced Miranda Dolive in preparation for rehearsals which began in September.
I began my work in September, replacing Vertrelle Cameron-Mickens who completed a successful 12-year tenure as Director of Music. And, at the end of December, Martha Anderson was hired as Interim Organist, replacing Hayward Mickens who completed his work after 12 successful years. So, the entire personnel of the music staff are new, or returning after an absence, as 2009 begins. Changes in personnel, rehearsal spaces and some ensemble designations have been made. Change for change sake is rarely effective but changes in order to involve more members in the life of the music ministry as Second Church are likely to be promising. So, as the 2009 calendar year begins, and as we continue to reinvigorate the life of our music ministry, please don’t be surprised by or concerned with additional changes!
I am delighted and honored to be serving our church at this time in this ministry.
Gary L. Anderson, Interim Director of Music
"Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly." John 10:10
The year 2008 was the usual bustle of activity within the congregation and with
our members. Second Seniors enjoyed a new series of programs that included speakers
and a trip to Saloto Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort. We had a great turnout
for Race For The Cure again this year. Outside involvement continued with SafeKids
Coalition through Kentucky Childrens Hospital and board membership at Interfaith
Counselling Center.
New this past year was offering a Flu Shot Clinic from the Health Department on a Sunday morning. It was well recived by many members. In May Second Church hosted the second Parish Nurse Institute in conjunction with UK College of Nursing. As happened in 2006, 20 new Parish Nurses were trained and sent home to begin a new Parish Nurse practice.
It remains my greatest joy to serve you!
Jackie Graves
2008 was a good year for the Nursery at Second Presbyterian Church. We continued with our child care on Sunday, Wednesday evening and Mothers’ Group on Tuesday. In addition to these times we have also had coverage for special events. Our enrollment this year is about the same as last year. The ages of the children in the Nursery were younger (3mths – 3 yrs). Most of the 4 and 5 year olds have moved up to other groups in the church (Godly Play). Sunday School in our Nursery is really booming. We had 6 children last Sunday in attendance. It is such a pleasure to work with these children. Thanks to our four faithful care givers we have changed some activities that are more age appropriate for the younger children. Thank you for your support of the Nursery. We look forward to 2009 with great anticipation.

Second Presbyterian Church has been blessed this year with a strong CE staff. Diane Banasiak started the year coordinating the entire CE program as well as the youth program. Holly Fuqua resigned at the end of 2007 to accept an Associate Pastor call at South Elkhorn Christian Church in Lexington after seven years as Youth Minister. We have been blessed to hire Barrett Milner as our half time Youth Minister who started September 1, 2008 and has been involved in youth work at several churches in the Presbytery and at Camp Birnamwood. Barrett is finishing his degree at the Lexington Theological Seminary and hopes to be ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 2009. His approachable style and ability to share the love of Christ has been well received by the youth of the Church. Also on September 1, Diane began her role as full-time Director of Christian Education allowing her to work more effectively with all the education committees of the church, teach on Sunday mornings and occasionally Wednesday evenings. Tina Harris, our Coordinator of Children’s Ministries has continued to develop our outstanding program for young people. We are truly blessed to have three individuals who are so passionate about growing our faith whether young or old.
CE continued in 2008 to offer many educational opportunities for children, youth and adults. New this year was the "Worship and Sacrament" class taught during the 11:00 service for older elementary children. The purpose of the class is to deepen the understanding of worship, the sacrament of Baptism and of Holy Communion. The program has been well received with nearly 30 children participating. The youth program has emphasized Bible study, faith development, service and fellowship. Along with Sunday morning church school and Sunday and Wednesday evening programs, our youth have been involved in service at Cambridge Place, retreats at Camp Burnamwood and Presbytery sponsored fellowship events.
We appreciate the many volunteers and teachers involved in CE work. While there are too many to list here we call attention to the CE committee comprised of elders Mike Vetter (chair), Shawn Caudill, Sam Varner and Lauren Kluemper (through May) along with Carol Behr, Lakshman Chelvarajan and Jim Drahovzal. We also were fortunate to have the leadership of Suzanne Irwin, chair of Church School Council and Hillary Miller, chair of the Youth Oversight Committee.
Forum Class 2008
Forum continued its 60+year-old format of a devotional by a member followed
by a speaker and time for questions/discussion. Many thanks to the planning committee
including Jack and Angene Wilson, Linda Levstik, Bobbi McAllister, Lowell Bush,
Bob and Judy Kirkland, Chris and Robin Reid, Michael and Susan Leemhuis, and Glenn
and Kathy Blomquist. 2008 programs included: trips to other countries (Palestine,
Honduras, Malawi, Latvia, and China) and biking across America; celebration of the
Lincoln bicentennial; looking at books for new adult readers and authors discussing
their works; preserving the environment; learning about various aspects of Lexington
life; and enjoying the Christmas season with song and discussion of traditions.
Humanities Council speakers included James C. Klotter and Gwyn Rubio. See www.2preslex.org/FORUM.HTM
for program titles, speakers and pictures.

The Congregational Life Committee seeks to encourage our members and invite visitors and proposed new members to follow Christ through the fellowship, worship, and ministry of Second Presbyterian Church, and to glorify God by using their gifts and talents in the life of the church and in the community. The CLC operates through a number of subcommittees, which have varying responsibilities.
Archives works to identify and preserve historical ministerial and congregational records, objects, and personal papers of enduring value for use by the church and the general public. Current projects include updating the pastor portrait gallery and the oral histories of the church.
Inquirers worked with the pastoral staff in offering two Inquirers’ classes last year, along with associated dinners hosted by the Session.
Liturgical Arts added Congregational Art work to the Gathering Place, Fellowship Hallway, and the Forum Room at various intervals throughout the year. Highlights included snowflakes in the winter and butterflies to welcome spring, made by the children of the church and suspended from the ceiling of the Fellowship Hallway. Also, "The POST" at the outside entrance to the Gathering Place was decorated on each side with four lovely banners. They also prepared a "Welcoming Wall", featuring pictures and hand written messages from members of the congregation, to welcome the arrival of Dan and Beth Hans to their new ministry.
Member Retention reviewed church attendance information on a monthly basis and established personal contact with those members whose pattern of attendance had changed, resulting in updated membership rosters.
Stephen Ministry provided a lay ministry of caring to members and non-members in accordance with the national Stephen Ministry program. The Grief Ministry program has been well received .
Time and Talent continually reviews and evaluates the use of the Time and Talent Report, generated biannually, seeking ways to help church groups identify volunteer opportunities and connect volunteers with groups needing their skills. The next general survey will be in 2009.
Welcoming is designing new ways to identify, contact, welcome, and encourage new residents and visitors to learn more about Second Church. There is an ongoing four-member group which contacts visitors who have signed the friendship pad at Worship Services. Assigned hosts and hostesses are in the Gathering Place between services every Sunday, searching out and greeting new people. They will also man a Welcome desk in the Gathering Place from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. on Sundays to direct newcomers to classes, nursery, and generally answer questions. During the year, they prepared invitations to non-members to worship with us at Christmas, and plan to do so again at Easter. With Fellowship Committee, they sponsored a "Trunk or Treat" celebration at Halloween.
Another long-standing subcommittee, Ad/Inviting, is now acting as part of Welcoming, since the missions of the two overlap in many areas. In 2008, they worked on refurbishing the Gathering Place, prepared information brochures, and evaluated the church’s media advertising.
All in all, 2008 was a fruitful, albeit transitional year. We look forward to the direction that the Holy Spirit will lead us in 2009.

The Finance Committee is responsible to the Session for regular review and recommendations on all financial matters of Second Presbyterian Church. The Finance Committee advises the Session on financial and investment policies, analyzes the general budget for presentation to the Session, and monitors the financial operations and financial affairs of the Church. The Committee oversees the investments of the general and designated funds of the Church and makes recommendations to the Session concerning any major unbudgeted expenses.
The Finance Committee worked with the Financial Manager, Mollie Sawyer, Church Staff, and an outside CPA to ensure proper accounting procedure, financial planning and stewardship of Church resources. Each month the Committee met and reviewed financial reports and provided recommendations to aid the Session in leadership of the Church. The continued faithful financial support of the congregation allowed completion of budgeted Church operating activities and funds to build financial soundness. Long term funds were reviewed quarterly and continue to be invested in diverse stock and bond funds with the Presbyterian New Covenant Funds.
Contributions for 2008 enabled the Congregation to end the year with a small surplus. For the year, total contribution receipts were $1,274,193.96 or 99.13%. Pledge receipts were negative ($50,960.86) for the budget year. Total income was $1,309,737.78 for the year or 94.37%, ($73.408.46) under the budgeted amount. Operational expenses for 2008 were under budget, so the Congregation ended with surplus for the year.
Programmed benevolences expended totaled $236,039.60, slightly decreasing from the $263,121 in benevolence contributions by the Congregation in 2007.
During 2008, the Finance Committee formed two sub-committees. One is an "Investment Committee" to be chaired by Anne Bolton and the other is an "Endowment Committee" to be chaired by David Porter. These sub-committees will be comprised of members from the Finance Committee and from the congregation at large.
Finance Committee members serving in 2008 include Anne Bolton, Bob Elliott, David Porter, Jay Busby, John Copeland, Malissa Kilgore, Stan Kramer and Tom Barker. Staff Representatives were Pastor and Head of Staff Dan Hans and Mollie Sawyer. Thanks to all of the members of the 2008 Finance Committee for their help and support throughout this past year.
Bob Elliott, Chair
"The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs." Isaiah 41:17-18 (NIV)
Second Presbyterian continued to strive to do God’s work in the world, thanks to the widespread service of the congregation, serving as active witnesses of the love of Christ in 2008.
In February, we completed the final stage of Second’s Mission Beyond Main, the mission component of the capital campaign for our Fellowship Hall. The foresight of Second’s members to think beyond our own needs enabled us to provide significant support in Kentucky and abroad, most recently with the construction of new classroom space and a women’s dorm at the University of Livingstonia College of Theology in Malawi, a country desperate for eager young clergy to provide leadership and minister to great need. Summer marked the fourth West Virginia mission trip and was the largest group yet, including 6 first timers!
Second joined with Lexington’s other PCUSA congregations to complete our 10th Habitat for Humanity home. In mid-November with the work complete, an overwhelmed Jackie Boone accepted the keys to her new home and offered praise for a better life for the grandchildren that now live with her.
Support continues year-round for Second’s many ongoing mission efforts within our walls, in the local community and region, and through support of missionaries abroad. We are grateful for all of your contributions in 2008. Please pray that we may continue to serve as witnesses to God’s presence in the world.
Mission Committee members include: AliceAnn Sanders, Joyce DeAeth, Jeannie Price-Kagan, Bill Fortune, Evelyn Kramer, Tambu Chirwa, Warren McClendon, Ronnie DeAeth, Jack and Angene Wilson and Pastor Darla Blatnik.
Tom Wade, Chair
The Worship and Music Committee members continued to support all of our worship services, including special services by coordinating ushers, communion, flowers, lay readers, and recordings. In addition, this committee is responsible for special events such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals that take place in our church. This committee supports the pastoral staff and music staff in planning all worship services and special events sponsored by the music staff. Our meetings typically are held on the second Monday evening of each month.
Wedding coordinator, Laurel Kratt, is leaving that position and we welcome Holly Wethall to work with our brides and grooms in 2009.
There were many changes in the music staff. In May we said goodbye to Miranda Dolive as Carillon Bell Choir and Children’s Choir Director. We also said farewell to Vertrelle and Hayward Mickens as they are moving away. We thank all of them for their years of service to Second Presbyterian. We thank Senica Taylor for so ably directing the choirs in worship during the summer. In late August Gary Anderson became our Interim Director of Music and Director of the Sanctuary Choir and Donna Phillips became Director of Carillon Bell Choir and Kids of the Kingdom Choir. In January 2009 we welcome Martha Anderson as interim organist. We are very blessed to have such exceptional talents from within our congregation.

The Personnel Committee (PC) is responsible to Session for regular reviews and recommendations on Personnel matters. The Committee recommends and maintains personnel policies; develops and updates job descriptions; develops and coordinates performance plans, proposes salary recommendations and benefit plans. The Committee assists with staff performance reviews and work related issues. It coordinates employment advertising and interviews candidates independently and participates with various Session Employment Search Groups. PC advises Session and seeks ratification on significant Personnel issues and employment matters. Much of Personnel’s committee work is coordinated with the pastor/head of staff, the Financial Manager and staff members to stay in touch with the personnel needs of our church. During Calendar Year 2008 the Personnel Committee participated in the following activities:
Personnel Committee members serving, all or part of, calendar year 2008 included: Caroline Baesler, Kathy Blomquist, Anne Bolton, Carl Boyer (scribe) Lakshman Chelvarajan, Jim Drahovzal, John Greene, Aubrey May (past chair), Gerry McGee, Phil Osborne, Randy Powell, Bobby Simpson and Dave Watt.

The Stewardship Committee had a busy and challenging year in 2008. The biggest challenge for the 2009 Stewardship campaign was THE ECONOMY. However, the committee was blessed by having the inspirational leadership of Dan Hans, and a committee membership of innovative and hard working members.
Recognizing the terrible state of the economy, we knew we had to formulate a plan which was not typical this year. Something that was eye-catching would be required in order to accomplish our assigned goal, namely to increase the Church budget by 4.5% in a very down economy. The Stewardship campaign this year demonstrated what a dedicated team could do when working with love in their hearts and a determination to bring to the attention of the Congregation and friends of Second Church the many ways and lives are impacted by the church. Thus the Call to Post campaign was developed and launched.
The Stewardship Committee recognized from the outset, no matter what approach is used, you cannot please everybody all the time. While that philosophy has again proven correct, judging by the many compliments we have received, and by the generous 2009 pledges which have been made to date, we feel our time and efforts were well spent. I wish to thank the Committee members, the Church staff, and the many volunteers for all their efforts on behalf of Second Presbyterian Church. While none of us can accurately predict all the changes 2009 will bring, I feel confident that our efforts directed to the coming year will be no less determined.
Respectfully submitted,
Hal Keller, Stewardship Chairperson
The Deacons of Second Presbyterian Church participate in Congregational Ministry:
Deacon of the Month --- The Deacon of the Month may visit the sick and infirm, send cards and flowers, and deliver rose buds to the parents of our "newest members."
Meals – Deacons help arrange meals for families with new babies, for persons recovering from surgery; for those grieving and in other situations as determined.

Deacons are also given Caring and Sharing partners who are shut-ins or elderly members to make sure they stay connected to the church through visits, cards, and phone calls. Deacons serve communion at the 11:00 a.m. service and also help with home communion. Deacons at the Door greet and assist persons with access needs before the 11:00 a.m. Sunday worship service and after the service deliver flowers to shut-ins and take remaining donuts to the Hope Center, Ronald McDonald House, or other facilities. Deacons also provide representatives to some Session committees. This year’s official representatives are: Nominating: Linda Watt; Congregational Life: Phil Maxson; Mission: Warren McClendon.
The Deacons of Second Presbyterian Church also participate in Outreach Ministry:
Westminster Village – A deacon representative sits on the Board of
Westminster Village. Deacons coordinate clothing drives, transport donated items,
