INFORMATION FOR 2008 PROJECT VOLUNTEERS
GENERAL
The congregation of Second Presbyterian is joining with other Lexington
Presbyterian Churches and Habitat for Humanity to build a home on Florida
Street. Construction will begin Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008.
When we arrive on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 20, only the foundation and
floor slab will be in place. We will frame the house and have it "under roof" by
Monday, Sept. 22 when mechanical and electrical professionals arrive to rough-in
the plumbing, heating and electrical work. We will continue working on the
outside of the house through the next week and will return on Saturday, Sept. 27
to insulate prior to the arrival of professional drywall installers. After the
drywall is finished, we will return each Saturday until completion on November
8. Here is the projected schedule for the project (tasks
handled by professional contractors are not shown). Sundays are intended as
"catch-up" days. We will work Sunday afternoons only as needed to stay on
schedule.

WHEN DO I SHOW UP?
Food Volunteers -If you indicated that you can help with food, you
will be called with information and instructions.
Construction Volunteers - If you have signed-up to work on the
first day (Sat. 9/20), come prepared to do frame carpentry and (if you like)
roofing or vinyl siding.
After the first day, the schedule is less predictable. Therefore,
we will contact you based on days/times/tasks you indicated you were available
for and actual tasks in progress at that time. You will be notified the
afternoon or evening before the day(s) you have signed-up for. Our goal is to
make the most efficient use of our volunteers' time.
WORKING HOURS & PARKING
Our work day will be from 8:00 a.m. until dusk. We understand your personal
schedule may dictate later arrival or earlier departure. Limited on-street
parking is available nearby. Car pooling is encouraged.
AGE REQUIREMENT & SAFETY
You must be at least 16 years of age to work at a Habitat construction site
(Habitat Requirement). Finishing the house on schedule is important. Your safety
is more important. Habitat supplies hard hats and safety glasses, use them when
appropriate. If you're anxious about using a particular tool, ask a more
experienced volunteer for assistance. Take breaks as necessary to avoid becoming
fatigued.

In general, you will need to bring your own basic tools. Following is a list of
tools that we suggest you bring for various activities. Feel free to bring any
other tools that will make your job easier.
